BP Bloodstock active at NZB Ready To Run

The 2020 Ready To Run at Karaka was a huge success for vendors last week, with the sale being much stronger than initially was anticipated. With a clearance rate of 77% and average spend at $95,349, it was nice to see some lit up faces around the complex in what’s been a tough year for the industry.

Lot 305 Tavistock x Mourasana Colt

BP Bloodstock was in attendance where we ended up being underbidders on a number of lots but were able to secure three great types. Lot 132 for Kris Lees Racing, the Tarzino x Alta Floresta filly from Westbury Stud. We also were able to secure lots 274 a Dundeel x Lodore Falls colt from Lyndhurst Farm and 305, the Tavistock x Mourasana colt from Curraghmore. These were both for Sam Kelt who has made an exciting return to the industry. We wish him all the success in the future with these two cracking colts who are being trained by Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott.

Upcoming Inglis and NZB Karaka Ready To Run Sales

Upcoming Inglis and NZB Karaka Ready To Run Sales

Over the last few weeks we have attended both the Taupo Inglis breeze ups and on farm inspections of the NZ horses heading to Sydney to be sold in the RTR sale on October 20.

Two horses ready to breeze up at Taupo

On Monday and Tuesday we were present at Te Rapa for the NZB RTR breeze ups in preparation for the sale which is being held at Karaka on November 18 & 19. Through all of the inspections we witnessed some very nice young horses who are bound to have a bright racing career. There were a number that stood out that should have strong appeal for Australian and Hong Kong buyers. We were very impressed with the preparation of the New Zealand vendors who have done an amazing job.

For any buyers wanting some assistance we would be more than willing to help. We will be onsite at Karaka in November for final inspections before the horses go through the ring.

Looking ahead to the upcoming sales – BP gives an insight into his plans

With the end of the year fast approaching, the 2020 Inglis Ready To Run is just around the corner, followed by the NZB Ready To Run. We will be attending the upcoming breeze ups both in Taupo (W Inglis) and at Te Rapa (Karaka) so for any buyers wanting assistance please let us know so we can make a particular to fully inspect any lots that may be of interest.

With the Karaka Yearling sale now confirmed for January, planning stages on how to approach the 2021 sales series has begun. We will be working hard to give potential buyers a good indication of what’s going to be on offer. We have already inspected close to 150 yearlings that are destined for the various yearling sales and it is our intention to inspect these and the majority of the others in December so we are in a position to give potential buyers an early heads up on what is on offer. Final inspections will be made at the Karaka complex during the lead to the sales.

Unfortunately, unless border restrictions suddenly change before January we will not be able to attend the Magic Millions or Inglis Classic yearling sales but will be doing considerable work on their pedigrees, photos and video’s in order to assist our clients. Should the border restrictions remain in place it is still our intention to get to the Melbourne Premier and stay on for the Inglis Easter Premier Yearling Sale.

Stellar weekend across the Tasman for Bruce Perry Bloodstock

Stellar weekend across the Tasman for Bruce Perry Bloodstock

Some wonderful results came out of Australia after a big weekend of racing. It was exciting to see Star Of The Seas (half-brother to Gr 1 winning Spieth) running a great second fresh up in the Gr 1 2020 Winx Stakes over 1400m. Bruce purchased his dam Stella Livia on behalf of Brent and Cherry Taylor back in 2007 at the Tattersalls December Mare sale for 50,000gns.The race was won by the outstanding Verry Elleegant who is by Zed. Zed was a BPB yearling purchase and was subsequently syndicated to stand at stud by Bruce.

Zaniah (Zoustar x Listen Here)

The Deep Field and Shooting To Win three-quarter sister, Zaniah, ran an amazing race on Saturday only to be beaten by a nose in a riveting photo finish in the Gr 3 Toy Show Handicap at Randwick. Trainer Kris Lees was very delighted with her effort but understandably gutted she couldn’t quite get up. Lees said she has pulled up really well and benefited hugely from the improved track conditions as really struggled on the heavy going in previous starts. Zaniah’s next assignment is likely to be the Gr 2 Sheraco Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill on the 12th of September. She is likely to come up again against stable mate Evalina who is also owned by Lib Petagna. Evalina pleased connections with her return to Australia in the Gr 3 Toy Show Handicap on Saturday as she is expected to take plenty of improvement from it. It was her first run since February when campaigning in New Zealand, during which was a listed winner and Gr 1 placed.

Midland (Brazen Beau x Pouter)

Midland, the 3 year-old colt by Brazen Beau, had a convincing three and a half length win at Taree on Sunday for trainer Kris Lees. He is a colt who has plenty of improvement in him mentally and physically and the plan at this stage will be to take him on quietly with maybe two more runs this campaign. The focus will be on the good later summer and autumn 3yo races in Sydney. Midland is definitely an exciting one to watch.

The first Ardrossan foals have finally arrived

The first Ardrossan foals have finally arrived

After some high anticipation from shareholders it was very exciting to receive the news of the first Ardrossan foal arriving at Inglewood Stud. The colt out of O’Reilly maiden mare Band, seems to have plenty of bone and size.

Waikato Studs Mark Chittick couldn’t help but call in and see him whilst on a trip down south and said he could not be more impressed. Very exciting times ahead for the young sire who still has some spots left for the 2020/2021 season.

Becca Perry Joins Family Bloodstock Business

Becca Perry Joins Family Bloodstock Business

Bruce and Anna are delighted that their daughter Becca is joining the Bruce Perry Bloodstock team. Becca has grown up around the Bloodstock and Racing industry and is really looking forward to getting more involved as we further grow the business.

Since leaving school Becca has completed a Bachelor’s degree and spent time living and travelling around the United States. Most recently she was working in Wellington as a Sports, Meetings and Events Travel Tour Coordinator. It was always Becca’s plan to get more involved with Bruce Perry Bloodstock and with Covid-19 hitting the travel industry with force, it was the ideal time to make the switch.

Becca & Bruce Perry

With the industry going through unprecedented times Bruce is adamant the future is bright, but people and businesses must adapt. Bruce Perry Bloodstock will be no different and thankfully can call on years of experience including the lessons learned from the 1987 Sharemarket crash which was just after the agency was established.

Bringing Becca on board will definitely be a huge advantage for the Company. With so much uncertainty surrounding auctions you would expect more breeders to retain quality yearlings and take them through to the racing stage to target the strong tried horse market. This is certainly one area that we will look to develop and involve her in. Likewise, it would be no surprise to see a swing back toward more private sales of mares, foals and yearlings so again that will continue to be a major focus going ahead. The BPB website will be used as a platform where Becca will be listing both current sales and stallion nominations for the upcoming breeding season.

Becca will also be working with Cherry Taylor in her Bloodstock Insurance business. She recently completed a General Insurance, Law and Regulation for Brokers paper and is delighted to be given the opportunity to learn from the best and be part of such a highly respected insurance brokerage. Bruce Perry Bloodstock has had a long-standing relationship with Cherry and both felt it was a great opportunity for all parties.
